Please note that you should take this course when you are in the first semester of your Junior year. In the online section, we will be using two textbooks. It is also recommended that you purchase the style manual of your discipline, especially if you will use it in your upper-level classes. Your style manual will have the basics, but the published manual in your discipline remains the final authority. [You will not need The Little, Brown Handbook required in some other sections of EN 300.]

Though not required, many students will find that owning their own copy of the most recent edition of the style manual for their discipline will help them to answer questions about documentation and writing style in their field of inquiry. You should pick the manual for your major or for the topic you plan to write on. You may want to wait to do this in consultation with a faculty mentor, if you are unsure. Or you may already own the appropriate style manual. The list below should give you an idea of what to expect. Basic information on MLA style, APA style, and Chicago Style is also included in A Pocket Handbook, so you shouldn't need a style manual right away. However, if you want to buy your books all at once and you realize that owning a style manual will help you in the future, then you may want to go ahead and purchase the manual for your discipline.

No published guide is recommended by your department (though Scientific Style And Format: The CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, And Publishers and The ACS Style Guide: Effective Communication of Scientific Information (An American Chemical Society Publication) are available). You should follow the department's writing guide for essays and literature reviews available online. It combines elements of the styles above and other style guides from journals in the field into a common style that is useful for undergraduate research and writing.
