This is the welcome page for Literature in the Postcolonial World, which will be taught in the Spring of 2005. In this course, I hope to try out a mixed delivery method for students who are on or near campus. That's why I've scheduled a class time for the class, Mondays from 2-4. During this time, students can come for face-to-face discussion of the assigned readings. I view this as a discussion section and extended office hours for the class. In other words, I won't lecture, since lecture notes will be posted online. Instead we will have the opportunity for more interaction than in regular online discussions. My hope is that this will spill over into the online discussions, and we may spend some of our time in the chatrooms online so off-campus students can join in via the chat tool. Occasionally during this time we'll have a movie to watch instead of class discussion. Students who can't come to campus or who don't attend the discussion session in a given week will be able to earn attendance credit and complete all assignments in the online environment, so you won't be penalized if you are off campus or can't come duing the scheduled time for discussions. When there are films, off-campus students will have the opportunity to rent the film (at their own expense) or do an alternate assignment, if the film is not readily available (see below). You can see the previous EN 330 syllabus on my MUW website. Naturally, there'll be quite a few changes to be made as I adapt the course content from EN 330 to the online environment. For instance, I'm considering changing the term paper quite a bit and may have 3 shorter papers instead of 1 long paper. I also want to look at how to implement presentations online. I know there are ways to do that in WebCT, and I'd like to give students that opportunity, perhaps as group projects, depending on the class size. I have posted the list of the books for this class (mostly novels) on my homepage..

Please come to the discussion session today, if at all possible. We will meet in the writing lab (Painter 203) and go over the syllabus and I'll explain a few things about working in WebCT. It probably won't take the full 2 hours! (If you know you need to come late, please email me so I know to wait for you.) If you have had troubles logging in or finding information in the course, this will be the best time to get some help.
